Tynemouth is a small picturesque village on the North East Coast line. Favourite tourist spot of the Swedes and Norwegians who get the ferry across the water for a small taster of English life.
The village has an ancient Priory and castle, which is open to the public. The castle grounds feature a WWI and WWII naval battery, which would have been used to protect the coastline from invasion. Being situated on the River Tyne, the area was once key to the shipping industry, most famously at Wallsend, we had the Swan Hunters ship yard, which built the luxury liner Mauritania, sister ship to the ill-fated Lusitania. The Olympic, sister ship to the Titanic found her end on the River Tyne, when at the end of a long career, she was broken up for scrap in Jarrow.
Tynemouth has many small shops all offering a variety of different things from jewellery to surf boards. A good place to shop for souvenirs and knick knacks.
On a sunny day you can relax on the busy front street with a coffee at a good number of cafes or take a stroll along one of the fine sand beaches, the best beach being longsands.
If you are visiting Tynemouth pop into Roys Bakery on Tynemouth Front Street. Here you can see some of my photography work exhibited in the cafe there.
